Health & Safety Apprentice
We’re recruiting a Health & Safety Apprentice to join our team at our operational customer site in Coalville. In this exciting new role, you’ll work towards completing SHE Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship.
As a SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) Apprentice, you will support the implementation and continuous improvement of safety, health, environmental, and quality standards across our transport and warehouse operations. This is a hands-on learning opportunity to gain practical experience while working towards a recognised qualification in SHEQ or related disciplines. You will be an active part of the Health & Safety Team, supporting colleagues in delivering safe, compliant, and efficient operations. You will also learn how strong SHEQ practices contribute to excellent customer service and help build long-term, trusted relationships with our clients.
The Details
- Apprenticeship Details: SHE Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship, 18 months in duration
- Annual salary: £22,000
- Schedule: Monday - Friday
- Hours: 08:00 -17:00 (40 Hours)
- Location: Coalville, with some local travel
- You will be paid on a monthly basis
- Start date: Monday 2nd February 2026
Job Objective:
- Assist in conducting site inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
- Support incident investigations and help identify root causes and corrective actions.
- Help maintain SHEQ documentation, including policies, procedures, and training records.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and awareness campaigns.
- Monitor compliance with legal and company standards across transport and warehouse activities.
- Contribute to environmental initiatives such as waste reduction and energy efficiency.
- Assist with data collection and reporting for KPIs and performance metrics.
- Engage with operational teams to promote a positive safety culture.
- Attend training sessions and complete coursework as part of the apprenticeship programme.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Health & Safety Team to support site-wide initiatives.
- Understand how SHEQ performance impacts customer satisfaction and service delivery.
- Support initiatives that improve customer confidence in our safety and quality standards.
Key Duties and Accountabilities (will include but not be limited to):
- Communicate and contribute effectively in both spoken and written word adapting to the audience to present information or training in an assertive, engaging way
- Work with others (colleagues, suppliers, customers) and lead by example in a collaborative and non- confrontational way
- Be able to adjust to change in relation to the requirements of the organisation
- Contribute to a positive Health & Safety culture
- Challenge behaviour that is inconsistent with company and Health & Safety culture
- Be able to identify areas for improvement and suggest sustainable innovative solutions

- Work within rules and regulations of professional competence and code of conduct as defined by a professional institution. Be able to resist pressures to allow others to utilise unsafe working practices.
- Be prepared to take additional responsibility, where you see it is necessary, to support the department/function or other colleagues
- Offer ideas for improving the service you offer or the processes for which you are responsible for
Training:
- An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. An average of 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.
- You will be expected to complete monthly online training to develop your skills and knowledge around your role. Your role will be based at: Menzies Distribution Solutions Ltd, Board 24, Franks Road, Coalville, LE67 1TT (some local travel required)
Key Experience and Qualifications:
- No previous experience necessary as full training will be given within SHE Technician apprenticeship course
- GCSE Maths and English grade C or above, or equivalent
- Analytical skills to be able to interpret and summarise data (MS Excel)
- Full and current UK driving license
- Regional travel (as required) to meet business needs
- Representing MDS at logistics and general external meetings and events
