Driving decarbonisation forward: MDS welcomes its first battery electric tractor units into operation.

Menzies Distribution Solutions (MDS) has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability journey with the introduction of its first battery electric tractor units into frontline operations.

The arrival of the new Scania 4x2 45S high-roof tractor units marks an important milestone in MDS's commitment to reducing emissions and supporting the transition to lower-carbon logistics. The vehicles will play a key role in helping the business explore and scale electric transport solutions as part of its wider decarbonisation strategy and involvement in the eFreight 2030 consortium.

To support the deployment of the new electric fleet, MDS has made a substantial investment in charging infrastructure across its operations. This includes the installation of cutting-edge charging technology capable of delivering up to 1 megawatt of power through Megawatt Charging System (MCS) capability. The infrastructure has been designed to maximise vehicle availability, improve operational efficiency and minimise downtime, ensuring the fleet can meet the demands of modern logistics operations.

Adam Purshall, Fleet, Programme & Systems Director at Menzies Distribution Solutions, said:

"The arrival of our first battery-electric tractor units marks a significant milestone in MDS's sustainability journey and our participation in the eFreight 2030 consortium. As we continue to invest in innovative solutions that support both our customers' carbon reduction ambitions and our own, we are proud to be working alongside Scania, a manufacturer that shares our commitment to quality, sustainability and operational excellence.

Their proven vehicle performance, forward-thinking approach to decarbonisation and industry-leading aftersales support made them the natural choice as we take this important step towards a lower-carbon future."

The introduction of these vehicles demonstrates how investment in both electric vehicle technology and supporting infrastructure can help accelerate decarbonisation across the transport sector, without compromising operational performance or service delivery.

As MDS continues to expand and develop sustainable transport solutions, initiatives such as this will play a vital role in supporting the company's long-term environmental commitments while delivering efficient, reliable logistics services for customers across the UK.
