At Menzies Distribution Solutions, sustainability isn't a side project. It's embedded in how we operate, how we manage our sites, and how we support the long-term resilience of our business.
That's why we partnered with Chirrup.ai and Knight Frank Investment Management to better understand the biodiversity at our Wakefield site through innovative acoustic monitoring technology.
By installing small acoustic monitoring devices on site, we were able to create a biodiversity baseline with no disruption to operations. The results demonstrated that even within a busy logistics environment serving clients across the retail, food and consumer goods sectors, local wildlife can thrive.
What we found was a reminder that biodiversity can thrive in unexpected places. Alongside 18 recorded bird species was a Willow Tit, a species on the UK's Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern. Not a bird you'd necessarily expect to encounter at a busy logistics facility, yet its presence highlights the important role industrial sites can play in supporting local wildlife when managed with biodiversity in mind.

Establishing a biodiversity baseline is an important first step. It helps us understand what is already present, identify opportunities for improvement, and make evidence-based decisions that support biodiversity across our estate. The project has also provided practical guidance on actions including enhancing pond ecology, creating insect-friendly areas and expanding habitat spaces.
A huge thank you to Chirrup.ai and Knight Frank Investment Management for their expertise and partnership. Together, we're proving that sustainability and logistics can go hand in hand, and that meaningful environmental action starts with understanding the sites we operate every day.
